Small Business News Spotlight: "Who to Know"

Nancy Matijasich is president and CEO of Manifest Corp., a business consulting and technology solutions provider.

Since its founding in 1994, Manifest has gone through many changes. Its most crucial being a division into four separate companies. The split put Manifest and its 55 professionals into highly focused entities with overlaping goals and clients. The result -- a perpetual state of forward motion.

Prior work:
Matijasich worked for a Cleveland-based consulting firm when she transferred to Columbus to open a branch office. With that success behind her, Matijasich co-founded her own consulting firm. Four years later she opened Manifest, her first solo venture.

Most interesting job:
Running this company,” she says. “It’s both aggravating and rewarding.”

On her nightstand:
The Bible. “It’s changed my whole perspective,” Matijasich says. “I’m really definitive now…much calmer, more positive and stronger.”

Preparation for entrepreneurship:
Watching her family’s businesses grow. Her mother owned a Baskin Robbin's ice cream shop; her father had a body repair shop and her grandfather owned and ran a construction company. Matijasich says, “I was raised believing I can do what ever I put my mind to as long as I believe in myself.”

Advice most often shared:
Matijasich says she freely dispenses advice whenever she’s asked, and she’s asked most often when the economy is bad. That’s when she tells people not to be cynical but find different ways to be successful. “There are so many neat things you find out about yourself when the market is poor. And sometimes, it’s in the worst market when you make your best gains personally,” Matijasich says. “I also tell people you don’t have to sacrifice your Christian beliefs to be good in business.”
